Full Sash Window Restoration

Expert restoration of original timber sash windows, repairing decay, draughts and damaged components while preserving the character, craftsmanship and heritage of your property.

Full Sash Window Restoration

Original timber sash windows can often be restored even when years of paint build-up, wear, draughts or localised decay have left them looking tired and difficult to use. Our Full Sash Window Restoration service is designed to preserve as much of the original window as practical while repairing the joinery and improving its operation, finish and comfort.

This is a comprehensive restoration of the whole sash window rather than a basic service. The sashes are removed and restored in our Twickenham workshop, while the sash boxes are repaired and prepared on site. Any broken panes of glass are replaced, rot repairs undertaken and the original tenon joints strengthened. The fully refurbished sashes are then reinstalled with draught proofing, new sash cords, suitable furniture and security locks.

The result is a sympathetically restored window that retains its original character and features while operating more smoothly and providing improved protection from draughts.

Is this for you?

Full sash window restoration may be appropriate if:

  •  Your original timber sash windows are tired, heavily painted or difficult to operate.

  • You want to retain original windows and period features rather than replace them.

  • There are areas of rot or deterioration within the sashes, sill or sash box that can be repaired.

  • The windows rattle or allow noticeable draughts.

  • Existing cords, pulleys, weights or window furniture require attention.

  • The windows need more comprehensive work than a standard service and draught proof.

How do we do it?

The timber sashes are carefully removed and taken to our workshop in Twickenham for restoration. They are stripped back, joints are repaired or rebuilt where necessary, existing glass is cleaned and re-sealed, and localised rot repairs are carried out. The sashes are then prepared through the appropriate primer, undercoat and finish-coat stages before returning to the property.

At the same time, the sash boxes are restored on site. Existing paint is stripped back, timber repairs are completed and hardwood cills are replaced where required before the boxes are prepared and painted to their final finish.

Once both the sashes and boxes are ready, the windows are reassembled. New waxed cotton sash cords are fitted and the sashes are balanced and reinstalled with a specialist draught-proofing system.

The restoration is completed with suitable sash furniture and security locks before final operation and finish checks are carried out.

The existing page states that this process takes approximately one week and that openings are secured with security boarding while the team is not on site. This timing and procedure should be retained if it remains the current standard process.
