In the Spring of 2025, we fully restored the sash windows and internal timber shutters to this Georgian townhouse in Twickenham.
The property had been vacant for some considerable time and the new owners were embarking on the journey of carefully restoring the building to its former beauty. The original sash windows had been severely neglected and were in a very poor state or repair.
We carefully removed the sashes and transported them back to our local workshop in Twickenham, where they were meticulously stripped back to wood. The timber joints were re-built, rot repairs were undertaken, broken panes of glass replaced and the glass re-sealed into the frames. The sashes were then painted throughout, with final top coats of Zinsser Weathershield AllCoat on the exterior and Johnstones Acrylic Intelligent Eggshell on the interior.
Whilst the sashes were being restored int he workshop the sash boxes were fully refurbished in-situ. New Accoya timber sills were fitted alongside new ball bearing sash pulleys. The boxes then received the same paint treatment as the sashes.
The newly restored sashes were re-hung on wax cotton sash cords, ensuring they were correctly weighted and draught-proof beadings were installed. A full range of high-quality window ironmongery was fitted throughout, including security locks.
In conjunction with restoring the windows we undertook the refurbishment of the internal timber shutters. Some of which were vertically sliding, others bi-folding into the surrounding timber panelling.
The shutters were stripped to remove the years of paint, sanded, repaired and then treated with Liberon's Wax Polish Black Bison in a Medium Oak finish. Black Bison is a high-quality wax polish that both feeds and protects the wood whilst enhancing its natural beauty.
By the end of this process the shutters were not only functioning they significantly complemented the windows and enhanced the overall aesthetics of the interior decor. This was particularly evident in the front upper ground room with its beautiful arched sash window with intricate glazing bar design.
Fantastic attention to detail. Beautifully restored windows done by skilled craftsmen who took pride in their work. Very respectful and punctual workmen who left the site tidy each day and worked well around us (and the cat!).
